In his article on his escape from slavery, he wrote that he gave the people what he thought were the best reasons for the concealment of the mode of his fleet. The first reason was, that such writing at some time in the actuality of slavery may be used by the master in contrary to the servant, and preclude the impending fleet of some people who may use the same manner as he did. The second reason was, if doable, still more necessary to muteness such as the printing of information would have put in danger the people and possessions of those who aided. The killing was not more strictly and undoubtedly penalized in the State of Maryland than that of assisting and backing the flight of a servant.
