1875, in Ireland . P'tit Bonhomme, an abandoned child like there were so many at that time, was first exploited by a puppet showman. Compassionate people then place him in a school for the underprivileged where he is hardly better off; he survives thanks to Grip, a teenager who took him under his protection. A fire having destroyed the school, an extravagant young actress takes him in, but, after having pampered him, abruptly gets rid of him. Moved by the toddler's distress, a family of brave farmers - adopted him; he spent four happy years in their company. His success does not make him forget those who helped him in difficult times: he reunites the Mac Carthy family who had dispersed, and offers him the money necessary to buy back his old farm; moreover, he takes his friend Grip as an associate and makes him marry Sissy, the cashier. At the age of sixteen, he will have reached an enviable position, but everything suggests that he will go further and realize his childhood dreams.
