From the Earth to the Moon, direct ride 97 hours 20 minutes is a science fiction novel by Jules Verne , published in 1865 . It relates how, after the end of the Civil War , an association of artillerymen and scientists linked to the military industry tried to send a shell manned by three men to the moon. De la Terre à la Lune is the first part of a diptych, which ends with Autour de la Lune , published four years later. Several characters from these novels are re-staged in Without Top Below , published twenty years later, without much success, then rediscovered in 1975. The work is one of Jules Verne's best-known novels. She has become a benchmark in the field of science fiction , with many heirs such as HG Wells' novel , The First Men in the Moon , in 1901 . The novel has been adapted numerous times for the screen, for cinema and television, starting in 1902 with Georges Méliès and his Voyage dans la Lune .
